Designed to look like a true temple of learning, it has Ionic columns on either side of the doorway and MUSEUM written above the lintel, in elegant gold relief. Inside the beautiful neo-classical building, a series of changing displays are housed in the spacious atrium, mezzanine and galleries.
The museum tells the story of Montrose and its people, from the earliest archaeological finds, the gallant Marquis of Montrose and the Jacobite uprisings, to the busy harbour and maritime trade. There is also a natural history section on the upper floor. (See photo below)
The art gallery within Montrose Museum hosts changing exhibitions from the community and from Angus Alive’s collections of paintings and sculptures.
The museum also hosts afternoon talks, children's activities and the occasional evening event.
Opening times: Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 5pm all year.
